Northern Bluet (Enallagma annexum) (Hagen, 1861)

 

Synonyms: Enallagma cyathigerum (in part)

 

Enallagma annexum is widespread in northern and western North America from Alaska to Newfoundland, and south to Baja California, New Mexico, and Virginia (it was formerly included with E. cyathigerum, which is now restricted to Eurasia). This species is found at ponds, marshes, bogs, and slow-flowing streams, from late May to mid-July; often alongside the very similar E. boreale. The male has predominantly blue abdomen; the female is green or yellow-green. Identification of Enallagma spp. from photographs alone may be problematic and in-hand examination is often required.
